SUP Yoga at Sunscape: You Think you Know, but you Have no Idea!

So, you think you know yoga? Or, you think you know SUP? Until you’ve done yoga on a SUP board, you have no idea! Maybe you’re a seasoned yogi, a lover of yoga retreats and a headstand master. Or maybe you sigh and roll your eyes, believing that everyone who likes yoga is also a vegetarian female with a penchant for coconut water. Maybe you’re the owner of a SUP board and have toured the world with paddle in-hand. Maybe you think “SUP” is a way of saying “hi” in America. Whatever yoga and SUP mean to you, SUP Yoga challenges all expectations! SUP Yoga stands for Stand Up Paddleboard Yoga. body-2Deep Focus and Connection SUP elevates traditional yoga practices by challenging your balance and focus. It makes even the most simple poses and paddling completely fresh. The deepest parts of your body and soul work in overtime to keep yourself and your mind on the board. In normal yoga practice and SUP session, you can depend on the use of your larger muscle groups to move you within and between poses. During a SUP Yoga session your body is forced to use the smaller muscles that improve your alignment. Usually that’s the muscles inside muscles, like your interior abs, which are the true source of balance. Funnily enough, the interior muscles are also closest to hearts, brains, and chakras! Maybe this is the reason why so many yogis find new connections with their practices after SUP… body-1First Time Fun Many first-time SUP-ers are also first-time Yogis. A lot of people who are disinclined to try yoga because it’s a “hippie” thing are willing to try SUP. Great! SUP combines two sports into one, meaning that people can explore either one (SUP or yoga) in a new way. Plus, the class is naturally less twisty intimidating than a normal yoga class. Since the very basic yoga poses are practiced, first-time yogis don’t have to be worried about finding themselves tied in knots. First-time SUP-ers and yogis like that SUP Yoga is basically 100% immersion in a new sport. By the time our session is over, most first-time SUP Yogis feel like seasoned veterans! body-3The Best Part One of the most unique things about SUP yoga is Sivasana, the final pose. This is a “resting posture” where yogis simply lay on the board, fingers and toes in the water, with the sun on their face and a loose, happy body. During Sivasana it’s simply you, the board, and the bright blue water. It’s one of the most magically relaxing ways to meditate. After a challenging SUP Yoga session, your body simply dissolves into the water… Surrounded by friends, tunes, and sun, there’s no better time to try SUP Yoga than at the Sunscape Festival. Who’s walking the line at Sunscape? On a Slackline of course . . . .

Attendees at Sunscape will have the opportunity to try out this growingly popular sport and for some of you already passionate about it, an opportunity to show us how its done. “Breath. Calm your mind. Let go of fear. Find Balance. It’s like meditation. Once you’re on the edge of survival you push yourself further than before. I have to be better than myself!” says Jorge Cortizo from Slackliner Malta

What is Slacklining?

Slacklining is a sport that was developed by Climbers in Yosemite Valley, California during the late 1970’s and early 1980’s. When they were not climbing, they took flat nylon webbing and stretched it between two rocky outcroppings over a void, and then learned to walk and balance on this webbing. The sister sport of tightrope walking, slackline is different because the rope is dynamic; it moves with you whereas tightrope walking is on a wire or steel cable, and bends some to the weight but is not stretching with each movement. In this way, slackline requires different muscles and training then tightrope walking.

Slacklining is a graceful form of moving meditation and many regard its benefits to be Zen like. “Walking the slackline makes you look within,” notes accomplished highliner Shawn Synder. “Everytime I walk a highline it’s almost like a beautiful enlightenment … an experience that opens your eyes, softens your heart, and quietens you a little bit.”

blue-lagoon
The Highs and the Lows

Slackline_handstandThe sport has evolved into different types: Longlines, which take great physical endurance as they are the most unsteady of lines. Highlines require the most mental strength, with the exposure of being so high up and having so much sky surrounding you, walking on 1″ thick webbing is subconsciously frightening, even if you are attached with harness and leash to the line.

Slacklining over the ground on shorter lengths can be similar to Yoga, in the slow movements and positions. Lastly, tricklining is a tangent of slacklining, involving jumping and even flips.

Overall slackline has a different meaning to each and every individual who takes part; everyone finds some philosophy in a sport of balance. It is not only an activity but a way of life. For some, slackline can lead you to some of the most beautiful places on earth, where you experience your surroundings in a way most people could never imagine. So give it a try at Sunscape. Better balance is just a couple of wobbly steps away!

New Campsite & 8 reasons to camp at Sunscape 2016

We are happy to announce that a new and improved campsite will be in place for Sunscape 2016. We are thankful for all the great feedback we have received and are very pleased to be able to offer a larger space for camping this year that offers more shade especially for those late mornings after a night of fun.

Most people choose to camp at festivals because they love nature or are ready for an adventure. Whether you enjoy other outdoor activities or are simply looking for an economic alternative to stay close to the festival, camping offers you a way to focus completely on yourself and your fun for a few days without external distractions. What you might not realize is that camping at Sunscape can give you numerous other benefits:

8 Reasons to camp at Sunscape 2016

1. The Fresh Airfest-area-nature

When you spend time in nature you take in more oxygen. That feeling of happiness that you get when you take your first breath of air at the campground isn’t all in your head–well, technically it is, but it’s a release of serotonin from the extra oxygen. Your body can function with less strain when there’s plenty of oxygen. That’s not the only benefit of fresh air. Research shows that some time outdoors can improve your blood pressure, improve digestion and give your immune system an extra boost. When you spend a few days outside, you get some serious health benefits from the extra oxygen and low levels of pollutants.

2. Improved Relationships & sense of community

Camping alone is plenty of fun, but if you bring along a friend, you’ll enjoy a unique experience together that will help you keep a healthy, happy relationship.

Being in close proximity with others, without the interference of modern devices like phones and tablets, can let you communicate more directly and give and receive eye contact.
Also having to depend on others to procure food and establish shelter takes us back to an almost primal sense of community and cooperation.

Socializing can extend your lifespan and delay memory problems and apart from the medical benefits, a few close relationships make life more fun. Invite a few friends on your trip to Sunscape

3. Improved Moods

Regular campers will often talk about how the first few days back from a trip seem happier. This isn’t without merit; spending some time outside in the sunlight can even out the levels of melatonin in your brain. Melatonin is the chemical that makes you feel tired and can induce feelings of depression, so by camping, you can enjoy better overall moods during and after your trip.

4. Sunshine

Sunshine feels great on your skin, and there’s an evolutionary reason for that. When you’re out in direct sunlight, you’re taking on a ton of Vitamin D, which allows your body to absorb calcium and phosphorous.

5. New Experience

No two camping trips are exactly the same, and that’s a good thing. Throw in a festival beside a beautiful unspoilt beach and that’s just awesome! Studies from the University of Texas and University of Michigan show that new experiences help to keep brains healthy. New activities that are both physically and intellectually stimulating have the greatest effect on brain health, and camping at a unique beach festival fits both of these criteria.

6. It could inspire a sense of Awe

As human beings, we’re wired for wonder; we feel compelled to stop and soak up the sunset or gaze up at the stars — and there’s no better place to do that than camping. Research even suggests that awe-inspiring moments can make us happier and more inventive. How’s that for a remedy to your creative rut?

7. The magical bubblebubble

Being stationed minutes away from all the action ensures that you completely integrate within Sunscape’s alternate reality without bursting that bubble every time you need a nap or to change up your festival outfit! It also gives you a sense of freedom of being exactly where you need to be without having to move for anything.

8. Waking up to this:
